June 2020

Dear Friends,

Just a short update from Owl Creek.

First thing is that we’ve put together a t-shirt fundraiser through a company called Custom Ink. The theme is “Bath House 2020” and any proceeds will go toward keeping the projects on track up in Modoc. We've got two weeks to sell some shirts! In case you’d like to support that goal by buying a t-shirt, here’s the link!

We made options for blue unisex and gray women's shirts of all sizes.

Second, now that restrictions are easing a bit and people are considering summer vacations via RV or camping experiences, it’s a great time to remind you all that the goal of this place is to provide a natural space where people can get away from the pressures of urban life and connect with simple but profound aspects of our human selves – mountains, soil, clean air, trees, quiet, water, wildlife. This might be a great time for you to do that. We have plenty of space and you are welcome to come out and pitch a tent or park your travel trailer. Bring your hiking boots and your fishing license. Just let me know your timing so we can be sure someone is here. Flight training is being re-authorized in slow and careful stages, and I’m now splitting my time between Modoc and the Bay Area. Here are two of my favorite photos from 2020 to inspire you.

Third, thanks to some awesome people, we are moving ahead with our projects up here. We’ve completed the bath house foundation (left) and will be moving on to the floor and then the walls. If your muscles are looking for a workout, consider coming out to help with the wall-raising the last weekend in July (weekend of July 26). We’ve also got the well pump going in later this week (right) and it should be operational by the last day of June. For those of you who have been out before, you know what that means… no more bucket baths, no more creek water in the solar shower – yay! It’ll still be an outdoor shower for a while, but now using potable water arriving via a hose from 200 feet underground.

Finally, Modoc County is still, as of this writing, at zero cases of coronavirus. It’s a safe place to visit, but that doesn’t mean you’ll get to escape the pandemic life completely. You may have read that the Sheriff’s office here announced they will not enforce wearing of masks, but they also support the Health department in encouraging people to do so. Here are the latest guidelines. Fortunately, with 200 acres, it’s relatively easy to maintain your 1-Cow social distance for safety.
